About Children’s Health Queensland

When the new Queensland Children’s Hospital prepared to open, Children’s Health Queensland faced a significant operational challenge. Before the hospital could reopen, thousands of staff, contractors and wardens needed to complete mandatory fire and emergency preparedness training to ensure the facility met strict safety and compliance requirements.

Training needed to be delivered across multiple sites and completed within a tight timeframe before staff could occupy the building. The organisation required a scalable solution that could deliver consistent, site-specific emergency training while ensuring full compliance and accurate reporting.

The Challenges

Training thousands of staff under tight time constraints

Delivering emergency preparedness training at this scale presented several challenges:

  • Coordinating training for more than 3,000 people across multiple sites.
  • Meeting strict compliance requirements before the hospital’s reopening.
  • Ensuring 100% completion before staff could access the new facility.
  • Managing the logistics of training staff, contractors, wardens and volunteers.
  • Incorporating site-specific building information and evacuation procedures.

Traditional face-to-face training methods would have been difficult to deliver within the required timeframe.

Children’s Health Queensland needed a faster and more flexible way to deliver emergency preparedness training while maintaining the high safety standards required in a hospital environment.

Overall, the system provided an efficient and effective solution to managing the significant fire and evacuation training requirements of our new hospital.”

Locatrix Solution

Site-specific emergency preparedness training with PlanSafe®

Locatrix implemented PlanSafe®, its online emergency preparedness and safety training platform, to deliver training tailored to the hospital’s environment.

A customised online fire and emergency training program was developed specifically for Queensland Children’s Hospital. The training package included:

  • Interactive digital floor plans and evacuation routes.
  • Emergency response procedures for hospital staff.
  • First response, refresher and fire warden training.
  • Detailed WHS and emergency management guidance.
  • A site induction program for staff, contractors and volunteers.

Because the training was delivered online, it could be accessed anytime and anywhere, allowing large numbers of staff to complete the training quickly.

The system also provided administrators with real-time reporting and compliance tracking, ensuring the hospital could confirm that all personnel had completed their mandatory training.

“The PlanSafe® platform enabled Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service to ensure that our staff, volunteers, service partners and contractors had completed their mandatory fire and evacuation training prior to occupying the new Queensland Children’s Hospital. More than 1,000 people completed the online fire training in the first week the program went live, and more than 3,000 staff had completed training by the time the hospital opened.”
