When Does a Non-Drafter Become a Drafter?

Meet Lachlan Docherty and Jack Godfrey, our two newest members to Locatrix’s drafting team.

Neither Lachlan or Jack had any real drafting experience yet today, after just a few weeks, they are as capable as any other member of the drafting team at creating high quality PlanStudio plans for our Customers.

Something we are very proud of at Locatrix is that we do a great job of growing our people.  Both Nathan Kirkby Executive Manager of Client Delivery and Kris Brown Executive Manager ANZ Sales started out as Drafters.

Sharing these success stories is important, especially when we talk to new clients who are considering Partnering with Locatrix.  Often the challenge is that the company doesn’t have a drafting resource. They maybe outsourcing the creation of plans which is often then completed overseas where quality, accuracy and ownership of a plan is handed over to a third party.  This also poses limitations as to what can be done with the plan, unlike with PlanStudio which provides a partner with endless opportunity in being able to better service their customers with their building information.

And besides that, what a great opportunity for a company to provide a career path for a young person?

Remember, within two days of training these young men were able to call themselves Drafters.

Here is their story:

What were you doing before you came to Locatrix?

Lachlan: I worked as an Optical Dispenser

Jack: I Previously worked as a Sales rep/Merchandiser

Did you have any prior drafting experience?

Lachlan: No.

Jack: I have experience with similar software, however only surface level experience.

What were you expecting when you came to work here?

Lachlan: That I would be working on a complex software that would take a few weeks of training at least.

Jack: I was expecting to spend my first couple months learning the software and gaining knowledge.

What surprised you the most about becoming a drafter?

Lachlan: How much I enjoy it.

Jack: I was most surprised about how fast I was able to learn and start working on client jobs.

What is your opinion of PlanStudio?

Lachlan: It’s great, the software is really simple and easy to use, but I can still produce highly detailed diagrams.

Jack: PlanStudio is a fantastic software that creates detailed floor plans with simple to use tools, the software itself is very simple to get used to and allows the use of many different tools while still keeping a simple and easy to use interface.

How were you trained?  Did you use the online training tutorials?

Lachlan: We were shown by Jayden, who made the training videos, and afterwards used his training videos to reference while drafting our office.

Jack: Primarily trained off training tutorials and supplied with the help from colleagues to learn the software.

How much face to face training did you need?

Lachlan: Around 5 hours, although I still ask questions to the Senior Drafter.

Jack: I did about 1 hour of basic training and tutorial watching to become comfortable with PlanStudio.

What is the best feature of the software?

Lachlan: The UI, it is very intuitive!

Jack: The Wall tool allows the user to choose from 7 different variations of walls to add to the plan and add detail.

How many buildings have you drafted since you started?

Lachlan: Approximately 35 in these first two weeks.

Jack: Within these first two weeks I have drafted 37 buildings so far.

How quickly were you able to be trained up in PlanStudio?

Lachlan: It took about 2 days to be ready for client projects.

Jack: Within 2 days of starting I had started drafting for clients.

What do you like most about working at Locatrix?

Lachlan: The people. It’s a company that really cares about its employees.

Jack: Helpful and friendly staff have made my entry into the company feel comfortable and exciting.

"The uptake of the PlanStudio technology is so incredibly easy and straightforward, that the vetting process when hiring is less about finding a person with the niche skillset we require, and more about ensuring that we attract individuals who align with our company's values and core beliefs"

Nathan Kirkby, Executive Manager Client Delivery
