The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity that focuses on breaking the cycle of disadvantage through education.Their mission is to support young Australians in need to succeed at school, so they can create better futures for themselves. They offer a wide range of learning and mentoring programs, scholarships, and career support initiatives aimed at helping children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

For the past two years, Locatrix has participated in The Smith Family’s Work Inspiration Program.

The Work Inspiration program is an employer-led initiative developed by The Smith Family to help young people - particularly those facing disadvantage - gain meaningful exposure to the world of work.

Key Features:

  • Hands-on Experience: Students participate in 2–3 day programs hosted by employers, where they engage in career-related activities and workplace interactions.
  • Career Insights: The program includes structured sessions called “Insights” that allow students to explore different career paths, understand workplace expectations, and connect with professionals.
  • Motivation and Aspiration Building: It aims to inspire students by showing them real-world career possibilities and helping them build aspirations for their future.
  • Support for Employers: The Smith Family provides free resources and guidance to help businesses set up and run their own Work Inspiration programs.

Feedback on this program to date has been incredibly positive. The goal is to help children understand job roles and workplace culture, to gain confidence in their career choices and to feel motivated and better prepared for life after school.

To date Helen Hall, Kristopher Brown, Rhys Collyer, Vicky Hawes, Alex Buronamov and Nathan Kirkby have all shared their career experience to student groups 20-30 students at a time receiving the following feedback from students:

“It opened my options”

“It is a good experience and good opportunity to see ideas on what you want to do”

“The activities were fun”

“Good opportunity to explore careers”

“New things to learn about”

“It helped with my perception of working”

“Overall, it was fun learning and seeing the different industries which was nice”

“Teaches you and inspires you no matter what you are interested in”

“At Locatrix we are fortunate to have a diverse group of employees that form our incredible culture.  Almost half of our staff were born outside Australia including myself. The Locatrix staff skill base varies vastly.   We live by our values which encourage openness with respect, to continually learn, and to share knowledge.  It is a pleasure and a privilege to be able to share the Locatrix story and staff work experience stories with the students that the Smith Family coordinate through this program.  We hope that the experience we share with them provides the participants valuable insights when deciding their career path".
The work inspiration program is a great way for Locatrix to contribute to our local community and offers a meaningful connection which we hope inspires a future generation”.
