If you were asked to identify a large workforce within Australia, one industry that would spring front of mind would be the Local Government sector.  Being an organization that exists for the benefit of the communities they serve they are duty and regulation bound to work to Workplace Health and Safety standards (WH&S).  It is important that everyone understands their site-specific instructions for each work location and be familiar with their emergency procedures.

One of Locatrix’s longstanding customers is City of Moreton Bay.  CMB is one of Queensland’s largest local governments and with many sites and staff to keep safe. They soon recognized that PlanSafe was able to handle all their compliance needs and not just for their WHS inductions.

With over 10,000 inductions completed within the last year, City of Moreton Bay have not only been able to look after their WH&S obligations but also roll out customized General Evacuation First Response across the entire organization. This not only means that they are compliant to Building Fire Safety Regulations 2008, but that each employee is competent and confident in their role should an emergency situation arise.

With 120 sites to maintain, PlanSafe helps CMB to communicate effectively real time data for all departments across the organization. That’s no mean feat when you have a diversity of requirements and needs across all departments from Parks & Gardens to Depots, Animal Shelters, Entertainment Centres, Libraries and Museums, to name but a few.

“It’s great to see a customer using PlanSafe to it’s full potential. Proof that it can be just as simple to implement even if the site is complex”

- Kris Brown, ANZ Exec Manager

PlanSafe can cater for customizable content that is not only site specific but also role specific.  This is particularly relevant to CMB as they have a range of more than 80 unique roles across the entire organization. Each with different needs and requirements.

It is important to City of Moreton Bay that they have a platform that can recognize those differences and different levels of training required across all 2,000+ team members. That they can be certain that all staff whether they be permanent, casual or volunteers are given the access to emergency preparedness training.

If we focus on the training for different roles within a council, they vary from:

  • Bush Fire Volunteers
  • Disaster Management Volunteers
  • Parks & Gardens
  • Community Halls
  • SES Depots
  • Aquatic Facilities

It would be a complex undertaking using traditional face-to-face training, but with PlanSafe it became much easier to assign the required training to those that need it.

Kris Brown, ANZ Exec Manager noted that

“CMB really care about their people and their environment. Regardless of their role or position within Council. This level of care is extended to volunteers, visitors and contractors.”

As with many workplaces now, there is a need to support and facilitate flexible working but still making sure safety is the ultimate goal and that people are kept out of harm’s way. CMB recognized that this was something close to their values. They also understood that not being organized in this aspect could expose a risk in Emergency Control Organizations (ECO) not being sufficiently covered. As a requirement of AS3745 2010 and Building Fire Regulation 2008, City of Moreton Bay knew they needed a platform that could support them.

They then decided that it was important to make sure that all their Team Members were trained as Fire Wardens. This allowed for anyone to step up in the case of an emergency even if the designated Fire Warden for their location wasn’t on site at the time.

“City of Moreton Bay could not be more of an ideal customer for PlanSafe. With a large widespread workforce and complex buildings, they were able to push the platform to be the online training that they need. It meets their own unique requirements that would be different to any other council.”

- Kris Brown

The beauty of PlanSafe is that it really does only take 30 minutes of your time and that it is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No costly face-to-face training, no need to organize and schedule groups of people across various departments any more, just a  click on a link and an easy to follow online training program.

Compliance and safety has become so much easier and affordable in the hands of PlanSafe.
