Customer Profile

CQUniversity is an Australian dual sector university based in Queensland. With over 35,000 students, 20+ locations, 300+ TAFE and University qualifications and almost 1400 staff, CQU is recognised in the Top 500 universities worldwide.

Business Situation

Staff training was delivered face-to-face and on an annual basis, which was not suitable for an organisation heavily reliant on online communication. CQU as a large-scale organisation that houses thousands across its 25 campuses, required an extensive, tailored emergency response system that would completely update its floor plans, exit strategies and training systems so that they would be easily accessed by staff, contractors and students at any time.

CQ University, upon reviewing their business situation, researched and implemented an online system to induct students, employees and visitors, providing them with necessary skills and knowledge to ensure they remain safe. The induction process ensures all Workplace Health and Safety, and Emergency Planning regulatory requirements are adhered to, and compliant.

CQU wanted a training system to:

  • Provide a single source of information for all types of employees, contractors and students.
  • Meet all of the legislative and administrative requirements of Workplace Health and Safety.
  • Provide an easy-to-use online system to induct people across multiple campuses and locations.
  • Automate record keeping of inducted trainees who have completed training, as well as those who are due for renewal.
  • Provide capability for individual training aspects based on the location.
  • Provide skills and knowledge to those with a lesser understanding of technology.
  • Ensure every inductee undertakes an assessment to confirm competency.

CQUniversity adopted Concept Safety’s online Safety Induction and Emergency Management Program to provide safety information and training to their employees, contractors, students and wardens. This has enabled them to achieve 100% compliance with the current WH&S Legislation, as well as adhere to the Building Fire Safety Regulations and Australian Standards (AS 3745-2010).

The scope of the Project included the Emergency Management and Induction training, customised to the university’s specific requirements.

As the university has specific requirements for contractors, detailed configuration work was needed in order to create a specific induction portal, which covered the broad set of hazards that CQU must manage.

Interactive floor plans were created for each site and building, to provide localised information on any form of equipment.

Present-day fire safety equipment training videos and a library of 70 emergency services certified videos for employees, First Responders, contractors and wardens were all integrated into the portal.

Site-specific Emergency Coordination Organisation Instruction (Safety Wardens) and videos customised to CQU’s requirements.

Different types of assessment were set up depending on the type of inductee. These results are then kept in a central database and will trigger a renewal alert after a certain timeframe.

Where will new technology drive the greatest return?

With an already dated system, CQUniversity turned to Concept Safety Systems to completely revise its emergency evacuation training strategies with its unique Fire Evacuation Program. The program provided the university with a more efficient solution that was easier to manage and, better still, operated online.  Concept Safety provided an online Emergency Management and Induction CQU was one of the first education facilities to adopt the interactive online program, and now they are able to ensure staff are trained in how to respond to all emergency scenarios. Concept Safety delivered its solution and demonstrated how the technology would drive the greatest return for the organisation.
